A Musical Journey Through Another Earth introduces listeners to a world of future-fantasy through a combined audio and visual experience. Inspired by role-playing video games, themed entertainment, and the multimedia franchises of the 90s and 2000s, the project aims to communicate biome and culture through musical composition, instrumentation, and atmospheric soundscapes while providing abstract cover-art accompaniments for viewers to form associations and immerse them in fictional worlds. Breeze through the alpine fairy queendom of Byavfīr, swim through the mermaid nation of Ungridi, drift through the scorpions’ arid desert of Vohjota, overlook the forest-folk’s night festival in Graveta, and feel the angels’ heat in the fiery kingdom of Astoralith across five distinct experiences on display.
The main work that this project branches off from has been in active development for over six years with a proper launch planned soon. Slotted to take the form of a web text serial, the story follows a a pair of Energy Fairies from Byavfīr, the green-themed civilian Leïra Xri, and the cyan-themed knight Cuhæ Avo as they are taken on a journey that challenges their understandings of their home and gives them the personal strength to confront the darkness that persists under the surface to be their best selves in the face of adversity.
The expression of this world and creative bubble is very personal to me, as the main characters were created in a time period where I was coming to grips with my LGBT status and seeking avenues to express and discover myself in ways I am corporeally restricted from. Additionally, I looked to previous creative works from when I was a child for inspiration, so DNA from creativity throughout my whole life is infused into the broader initiative and trickles down even to this slice presented for the gallery. A Musical Journey Through Another Earth is just one peek into this universe of fantasy tied to my identity, history, and future.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Alia Hutchins is a digital musician and character artist from southern New Hampshire. Having over seven years of experience in professional and unprofessional DAWs, she has composed soundtracks for numerous amateur student game projects and original songs. In the spirit of enabling creative freedom among young adults, she creates digital character artwork based on the personal imaginations of the introverted and shy.
