Mask is a mixed-media zine centric on the concept of masks in professional wrestling.Vibrant and charming illustrations are arranged amongst the words of independent wrestlers, analysis of notable luchadors, poetry, as well as a maskmaker’s widsom. Those who wear masks in the ring often set themselves apart from those that don’t, but what do they offer the individuals who don them? Whether it is comfort, bravery, or an extension of a persona, there is no doubt that professional wrestling preserves the ancient tradition of these unique artifacts.
ARTIST STATEMENT: Syd Hernandez is a multimedia, multi-interested, and multi-practicing artist. Their work is highly informed by pro-wrestling, queerness, and human connection. In every piece of their work, there is an appreciation in creating and honoring authentic stories. Whether it be fictional or otherwise, intimacy and physicality are displayed through illustrations or written works with a distinct fondness for the raw, bizarre, and vulnerable.
